QR codes let in-store guests open a restaurant's digital menu and place their own orders from their phones. This article explains why restaurants use QR codes, how to download the pre-generated QR codes for a Revenue Center, and how to create QR codes for individual tables.
Why Use QR Codes
Restaurants commonly use QR codes to direct in-person guests to order digitally for the following reasons:
- Improved order accuracy: Guests enter their own orders, which reduces the risk of missed items, allergen notes, or special requests that can occur with manual order-taking.
- Real-time menu updates: When an item sells out and is marked unavailable (86'd), the QR code menu updates in real time, which prevents guests from ordering out-of-stock items.
- Labor savings: QR ordering reduces the need for a dedicated front-of-house cashier or dining-room staff. Direct Ordering provides pre-generated QR codes at no cost.
- Environmental benefit: An interactive digital menu removes the need to reprint paper menus each time an item or price changes.
- Quality assurance: With fewer ordering interruptions, staff can focus on the quality and accuracy of each order.
- Improved guest experience: Guests order at their own pace without waiting in a physical line, and cannot order out-of-stock items.
Downloading Custom QR Codes for In-Store Guests
- In the Direct Ordering Admin Panel, navigate to Stores and select a Store location.
- Click Revenue Centers and select the specific Revenue Center to download a custom QR code for. (QR codes are specific to each Store and Revenue Center.)
- In the left navigation, select QR Codes.
- Test the three pre-generated QR codes with a smartphone camera to confirm they direct guests to the expected URLs. The three options are:
- Nothing Preselected: Guests choose whether to Eat Here (dine-in) or Take Out (to-go).
- Take Out: Guests place a Take Out order in person.
- Eat Here: Guests place a Dine-in order in person.
Note: All ordering options let customers check out as a guest or log into an existing Direct Ordering account to access earned rewards and saved payment methods for a faster checkout.
- Click the Download button to save each QR code. The selected QR codes can be used on print materials as many times as needed.

Creating QR Codes for Each Table
- In the Direct Ordering Admin Panel, navigate to Stores and select a Store location.
- Click Revenue Centers and select the specific Revenue Center to set up table QR codes for. (In this example, QR codes are specific to the Store, Revenue Center, and Table.)
- In the left navigation, select QR Codes.
- Scroll down to the Generate QR Codes with Table Numbers section.
- To bulk-add QR codes for tables numbered consecutively starting at 1, type the highest table number into the Table Numbers field and click Generate QR Code to create all table QR codes at once.
- Download each table's QR code using the Download button. (Each downloaded file is named in the format "Store Name_qr-code_eat_here_table#," which makes the correct file easy to identify when creating print materials.)
- To remove table QR codes or generate new ones with different parameters, click Clear All to delete them from the account.
Note: Deleting a table QR code from the backend does not invalidate a QR code that is already on display. Once a QR code is created, it remains valid permanently. To prevent guests from ordering through an outdated URL, test every QR code before sending it to print.
