Gratuity Percentages Explained
Direct Ordering allows you to set a default gratuity percentage for each of your store locations. When a customer checks out on your Direct Ordering website or mobile app, you can kindly display your preferred tip percentage (as indicated by a green checkmark, shown below). The customer decides whether they'd like to use your default suggestion, change to a different offered percentage, or enter a custom dollar amount.
The most common default gratuity amounts we see are 15% for online ordering locations and 5% for catering locations, but this is completely your choice.
Please note that gratuity settings at a Store level apply to all Revenue Centers within that Store. In Direct Ordering, you have the ability to override the Store level gratuity settings by applying new settings within a specific Revenue Center. A restaurant may set 10%, 15%, 18%, and 20% gratuity options for all of their Revenue Centers at a Store level, but may want to choose smaller percentage options for those ordering from their Catering menu, for example, such as 3%, 5%, 7%, and 9%.
Set a Store-wide default gratuity / tip percentage
In your Direct Ordering Admin Panel
Click on Store > select the Store location you'd like to edit.
Click on Gratuity.
Enter a minimum of 4 (maximum of 5) gratuity percentage option numbers in the Gratuity Increments section.
Choose the Service Types to which you'd like these gratuity percentages to be shown at checkout (Pick-Up, Delivery, Both, or Neither).
Choose a Suggested Gratuity Percentage, which will be the default gratuity that customers are suggested upon checkout.
Click Submit to save your changes.
Note: Gratuity percentages set at a Store level apply to all Revenue Centers within that Store. See the instructions below if you'd like to change the suggested gratuity percentages for a single Revenue Center. Doing so will override the suggested tip percentages you set at the Store level.
Override a Store's gratuity percentage in a single Revenue Center
As discussed above, you can override the store-level gratuity settings at one or more revenue centers if needed. For instance, if you want to specify different tip increments for catering orders, you can do so by configuring different gratuity settings at your Catering revenue center for this store.
Here's how to go about doing this:
In your Direct Ordering Admin Panel
Click on Stores and choose the store you want to edit.
Click on Revenue Centers in the left navigation bar and then choose a revenue center where you want to override the Store's gratuity settings.
In the screen recording below, the Catering Revenue Center's gratuity percentages of 3%, 5% (default), 7%, and 9% will override the 10%, 15% (default), 18%, and 20% listed at the Store level.
Customer view at Checkout
The checkout page displays both the Percentage and the Dollar amount, so it's easy for the customer to understand what amount they are agreeing to pay.
The default suggested Tip of 15% (set in your backend) is indicated on the frontend by a green checkmark.
If none of the default choices align with a customer's needs, they have the option to apply a custom tip dollar amount in the field beneath the default choices.
