Here are some general best practices recommended for your POS menu set up to ensure a smooth initial integration process:
General Menu Structure
Items
-
Menu item names should be customer friendly - If you use internal lingo for your menu item names and your POS provides an option for a secondary, online name, use this field to assign a customer-friendly name to the item
-
Only have one instance of each menu item - do not have the same item in multiple categories that you plan on including in your online menu
Modifier Groups
-
Make sure that the minimum and maximum number of allowed modifiers (min/max) are defined correctly and match the min/max defined for these modifier groups on your non-api integrated ordering platform menus
Modifiers
-
Avoid nested modifiers - which are modifier groups that are assigned to modifiers within another modifier group -
-
EXAMPLE:
Avoid same name modifiers - Note: This is POS specific - we ARE able to accommodate same name modifiers for Toast, Revel, Brink, Square, Clover, and SpotOn
-
EXAMPLE 1 - when there is more than one modifier with the same name in a modifier group
-
EXAMPLE 2 - when there is more than one modifier with the same name in two or more different modifier groups for the same item → The same name modifiers must be distinguished somehow - in the example below, an asterisk is used
-
Multiple Menus
-
Some POS Systems do NOT support having multiple menus pushed to Checkmate - These include SpotOn, Square, Clover, Revel
-
Some Ordering Platforms do NOT support having multiple menus displayed - Currently, Ritual does not support this feature
Pizza Menus
If you have pizzas on your menu, in order to properly accommodate for pizza toppings, you must include the following modifier groups:
-
Whole Toppings
-
First 1/2 Toppings OR Left 1/2 Toppings
-
Second 1/2 Toppings OR Right 1/2 Toppings
Note: Please refer to Modifiers section above regarding same name modifiers so that you properly name same name toppings based on this guidance.
Online Menu Configuration in the POS
It is recommended that you maintain a unique online menu, separate from your in-store menu, to be integrated into Checkmate’s system and used for all of your Ordering Platform menus.
This allows for easier online menu management going forward --where you can quickly reference your online menu in your POS and do not have to sift through your menu or remember which items in your POS are available online and which ones are not.
Note: This feature is POS specific. Some POS Systems do NOT support multiple menu programming. This includes SpotOn, Square, Clover, and Revel.
Other Best Practices
-
For Revel POS customers only, Revel does NOT support special characters such as &, #, etc. for items/modifiers/modifier groups integrating into our system. These characters need to be removed prior to Checkmate pulling your menu into our system.
-
For Doordash customers only, the resolution of images used for your Doordash menu MUST be a minimum of 16000wx800h, aspect ratio 16:9, and max size 2MB.
Online Visibility
Some POS Systems require that you mark the items/categories/modifier groups/modifiers that you wish to make visible online. This is POS-specific.
Alcohol Tagging
If you plan to sell alcoholic items online, you must specifically identify these items in your POS. We refer to this as alcohol tagging.
Please refer to the table above for guidance on tagging alcoholic items in your POS.
Note: If you do not see your POS listed above, please ask your Onboarding Specialist whether this step is required for your POS.
