What a CAPTCHA Is and Why It Is Used
CAPTCHA stands for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart. A CAPTCHA presents challenges that are difficult for computers to perform but relatively easy for humans, such as identifying stretched letters or numbers, or selecting a specific type of photo within a grid.
A CAPTCHA is one way to prevent cybercriminals from using a site for card testing, where a bot tests large numbers of stolen credit cards by placing small test transactions on an e-commerce site. These credit cards are not stolen from the brand or from Direct Ordering. Direct Ordering is PCI compliant and does not store credit card data. The stolen credit card numbers are acquired elsewhere, but cybercriminals can use any e-commerce site to test them. More information about card testing is available in Card Testing Fraud: What You Need to Know.
About Google reCAPTCHA
To enhance security on the checkout page and other pages associated with customer credit cards, Direct Ordering supports adding a Google reCAPTCHA (a CAPTCHA service owned by Google) above the Submit button. The reCAPTCHA appears as shown below when a customer adds a new credit card to their profile:
How to Add Google reCAPTCHA
Follow these steps to set up Google reCAPTCHA:
- Log in to the Direct Ordering Admin Panel.
- Select Settings (the gear icon).
- In the User Experience section, select Recaptcha.
- Select which credit card forms on the Direct Ordering website should include the Google reCAPTCHA security measure.
How a Customer Experiences Google reCAPTCHA
At checkout, when a customer attempts to add a new credit card payment, the reCAPTCHA prompt requires them to select the "I'm not a robot" checkbox to confirm they are human. Completing this step adds the new card, and the customer can then check out using that credit card for the current order and for any future order.
