Direct Ordering allows a default gratuity percentage to be set for each store location. When a customer checks out on the Direct Ordering website or mobile app, the preferred tip percentage can be displayed as a suggestion, indicated by a green checkmark. The customer decides whether to use the suggested default, select a different offered percentage, or enter a custom dollar amount.
The most common default gratuity amounts are 15% for online ordering locations and 5% for catering locations, though this is fully configurable.
Gratuity settings at the store level apply to all revenue centers within that store. Store-level gratuity settings can be overridden by applying new settings within a specific revenue center. For example, a restaurant may set 10%, 15%, 18%, and 20% gratuity options for all revenue centers at the store level, but choose smaller options such as 3%, 5%, 7%, and 9% for those ordering from a catering menu.
Setting a Store-Wide Default Gratuity Percentage
- Open the Direct Ordering Admin Panel.
- Click Store and select the store location to edit.
- Click Gratuity.
- Enter a minimum of four and a maximum of five gratuity percentage options in the Gratuity Increments section.
- Choose the Service Types for which these gratuity percentages appear at checkout (Pick-Up, Delivery, Both, or Neither).
- Choose a Suggested Gratuity Percentage, which becomes the default gratuity suggested to customers at checkout.
- Click Submit to save the changes.
Overriding a Store's Gratuity Percentage in a Single Revenue Center
Store-level gratuity settings can be overridden at one or more revenue centers when needed. For example, to specify different tip increments for catering orders, different gratuity settings can be configured at the catering revenue center for that store.
The steps below describe how to do this:
- Open the Direct Ordering Admin Panel.
- Click Stores and choose the store to edit.
- Click Revenue Centers in the left navigation bar, then choose the revenue center where the store's gratuity settings should be overridden.
In the recording below, the catering revenue center's gratuity percentages of 3%, 5% (default), 7%, and 9% override the 10%, 15% (default), 18%, and 20% set at the store level.
Customer View at Checkout
- The checkout page displays both the percentage and the dollar amount, so the customer can clearly see the amount they are agreeing to pay.
- The default suggested tip set in the backend is indicated on the storefront by a green checkmark.
- If none of the default choices fit, the customer can enter a custom tip dollar amount in the field beneath the default choices.
